Launch of ISAAFFIK – a new interactive webportal for Arctic researchers

ISAAFFIK Arctic Gateway is a new website primarily for Arctic researchers within the Kingdom of Denmark and international collaborators. The website is launched 8th April. See the press release here.

The idea of ISAAFFIK (www.isaaffik.org) is to foster cost-effective cooperation, synergies and creativity among universities and knowledge centers in areas of Arctic research, education, consultancy and logistics.

At the moment, ISAAFFIK partners include Aarhus University, Danish Meteorological Institute, Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, Technical University of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, University of Southern Denmark and the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Four areas are covered on ISAAFFIK: research, education, consultancy and logistics. DMI is involved in all of them. Within logistics and infrastructure, DMI looks forward to increased cooperation with the other partners and especially with the Arctic Command in Nuuk, Greenland, to reduce the high cost of travel and transportation in the Arctic through better coordination. DMI will also be able share lab- and observation infrastructure facilities with other organizations. DMI’s physical facilities in Greenland are all displayed on ISAAFFIK. The website allows for better visibility for the DMI research in the Arctic. In addition, DMI researchers supervise MSc and PhD students working on Arctic research, and their projects will gain further visibility through ISAAFFIK.

In Greenland, DMI is the weather authority and serves the Greenlandic society with weather forecasts and the navigation with ice charting. DMI is able to provide climatological data from a large number of weather stations around Greenland, important for many research projects.

Summit Station is located on the top of the Greenland Ice Sheet at 3,216 m a.s.l. Information on the Summit Station is available at the ISAAFFIK website as DMI weather station: www.isaaffik.org/users/summit-station-katrine-gorham
